ESL designs and installs affordable solar energy systems for households, outdoor lighting, street lighting, water pumping solutions, water heating, and specialised large scale solar energy projects. In December 2019, ESL opened “The Solar Warehouse” a retail shop merchandising all the key equipment used in the solar sector. The Solar Warehouse is situated at Best Oil in Area 49.

In Malawi, ESL has developed capacity to coordinate and provide grid extension services including large scale construction of high, medium and low voltage powerlines, underground cables and substations (transformers). ESL also has the capacity to supply conductors (oak and wasp), transformers and other associated power line construction materials.

Household Air Pollution (HAP) is the source of many deaths especially in underdeveloped countries like Malawi where people still use open fires to cook. According to the World Health Organization, over 4 million people die worldwide prematurely from illness attributable to household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels and 50% of premature deaths due to pneumonia among children under 5 are caused by soot inhaled from household air pollution (www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/household-air-pollution-and-health). The use of charcoal (Makala) continues in most Malawian households despite the negative impact on health and the environment. Surprisingly, even relatively average and higher-income earning households shun the use of efficient, safe and clean energy sources like gas.
